Je ne l'avais pas posté avant car il y avait beaucoup de nettoyage à faire sur photoshop. La petite s'était salie à se promener dans l'herbe, j'ai donc du laver digitalement la laine ainsi qu'enlever un cheveux de sa mêre laissé sur sa veste de laine, un travail long et méticuleux. Le fond noir est une couverte, j'y ai seulement éliminé certains reflets distrayant. Les ajustements à l'image sont minimes, juste un brin de sharpening et de réduction de bruit.

La photo à été prise de jour en fin de journée et j'ai utilisé un peu de flash diffusé pour combler les ombres et faire ressortir le sujet. J'adore mon super flash 430EX !

J'aurais préféré quelques nuages pour la photo mais le ciel était d'un bleu parfait, accentué ici par l'utilisation d'un filtre polarizant. Notez que j'ai ajusté le filtre pour obtenir un ciel légèrement plus fonçé du côté de l'église...

Info about sensor size and its effects.

A 1.6x cropped sensor of a true dSLR is about 10 times more sensitive than my S5is, which means you get the same image quality at ISO1000 as I get at ISO 100. A full frame Canon 5D with kit lens (a good pro quality 28-105mm zoom) sells for about 3300. A good cropped sensor camera like the Canon D40 sells for about 2600 (with the same lens). The 40D is their most advanced cropped sensor dSLR and provides very good results for portraits if paired with a good prime portrait lens (add1500$). A full frame sensor is well...a full frame sensor ! It is worth the price difference. It is wider, more sensitive and provide wider view., very good for landscape or low light portraits. Only advantage of the 40D is its crop factor multiply the zoom by 1.6 so it`s good for those who prefer zoom over wide angle. I could go on with the comparaison but will stop here because 3 years from now, new models will hit the street and these will beoutdated anyway (and maybe availlable at a much lower price).

Depending on the price difference about 3 years from now of a cropped vs full frame dSLR, that's a choice I'll have to make but in any case, there will be a great leap in image quality, light sensitivity and DOF control compared to my S5is.

Marc: La prochaine fois que tu viens faire un tour en ville, apportes ta caméra, on pourra s'amuser à faire des tests. (C'est une Canon rebel je crois hein ? Si c'est le cas tu pourras aussi t'amuser avec mon flash 430EX).

I still have to verify this calculator.

My S5 have a 1/2.5" sensor and 50mm focal length = 8.33mm of actual lens focal length (1/6). From 2 meters away at an apearture of f4, it gives a range of acceptable sharpness from 1.245 m to 5.079 m (3.834 m total depth). As you can see, at 50mm equivalent the field is not centered on the subject but most of it is at the back, making it difficult to eliminate the background.

If using a 100mm equivalent from 2M away (shooting only the head) at f4, it gets better with a theorical focus range from 1.738 m to 2.355 m (0.618 m total depth). Using a full frame canon 5D with a 100mm lens at f4, it really gets professional with a DOF of ony 0.1M. A compromise like the Rebel Xti 1.6 crop factor sensor would provide 0.164 m DOF in those same conditions, which is still very good.

To make a long story short, it is mathematically or shall I say optically impossible to get a professional and selective result with a cheap S5 (or other point and shoot cameras) because in similar conditions, the DOF is about 6 times deeper so it is very dificult to eliminate the background. With my S5, the main utility of shooting from further away with more zoom is to avoid getting most of the DOF at the back of the subject but otherwise, adjusting zoom to see the same image on the picture, past 100mm equivalent it doesn't have much effect of the DOF. Since my 430ex flash can zoom up to 105mm, I say that would be the sweet spot to use.

I still have to see what would be the effect of using the 1.5x teleconverter lens. I'm not sure it would be just like multiplying the real focal length by 1.5...

Here is why a full frame dSLR like the Canon 5D is desirable over a cropped sensor (cheaper) camera :

If you like wide angles, this is what you need. Everything else being equal, you also get a shallower minimum depth of field with the full frame (no I won`t get into the optical math explanations), which is great for portraits.

Interesting links here and there about lense sharpness and expensive equipment vs cheap amateur cameras and lenses ... It tells you how the photographer is so much more important than the equipment used.

Of course there's a limit to this statement. I'm now able to shot things with my new "cheap" S5is I would never be able to capture with my previous piece of junk. Yes the S5 have many more limitation than a top of the line full frame dSLR but at 1/10 the price tag, I can still take pictures at maybe 1/2 the quality if I learn these limits and find in which conditions my S5 works best.

I'm curently in experimentation mode (which is why I'm not posting pics yet).

Still I now have a cheap home made print of a very nice pic I took of my daughter with the old Fuji junk. This picture is incredible because I captured what I think is the escence of her personality (and she was maybe about 1 month old). Only in about 20 years will I know if my shot was realy that great but I think it is. Of course with my S5 the same shot would be worthy of a large print, which I won't really be able to do as it is. There's a tiny bit of over exposure on part of her white dress and even in macro I couldn't blur the background properly but that's nothing I can't fix in photoshop. I'll post that shot later, you'll see what I mean then...

I like portrait shot more and more, especially children's portraits. I'm not just taking random pic of my daughter, I'm trying to capture the escence of childhood at various stages because that's something that disapear over time. One day maybe she'll be in a hard pass and I'll be able to show some of those pic to her to remind her who she was and where she comes from.

I'm also afraid I'll forget. I'm capturing lights and shadows because I want to remember...

If I win the lottery, which would also allow me enough time to take photography courses to get the skill needed to profit from such an amazing camera, here's what I would get :

I don't care it's "only 10 MegaPixel" because the quality of those pixels far exceed what's usually found even on the high end market. This camera is also super fast...and super expensive at about 5000$...

With this amazing 85mm F1.2 lense for portraits:

Exceptional Bokeh (blur), exceptional speed (very luminous). Exceptional price : 2000$.

PTlens est un petit software à seulement 15$ pour corriger les distorsions de lentilles (très utiles entre autre pour corriger les distorsions de linéarité des lentilles grand angle). Il corrige aussi les abérations chromatiques du S5is et les distorsion de perspective !

Si j'ai bien compris ils ont une database de différentes caméra/lentilles et la S5is est déjà dedans. Cela permet de rapidement effectuer les corrections.

Presque trop beau pour être vrai !

Blutengel - Labyrinth : Etymotic ER6 test

I usually listen to this type of music with my Audio-Technica CK7 or Sony EX90 because the ER6 just can't provide such unatural deep bass as we can ear on a Blutengel album.

I'm now making an exception. To help the bass I cranked Mach3Bass to maximum on my Iaudio7. My purpose is to concentrate on the voices, the ER6's speciality. It feels like removing a veil. Those ER6 are SO sharp and clear and tight it is amazing. Even the lowered bass is still very nice to ear when it is so tight (yes, even with maximum Mach3bass setting). I would not use the ER6 for this music on a regular basis but it is still an interesting test. Everything is ultra sharp. Every sounds snaps like furious whips. This is an ultra technical listening experience.

(I'll have to repeat all those tests later in lossless format when I receive the original CD. That will be like removing another veil, I expect quite an experience from it as the production work on Labyrinth already sound exceptional on MP3s).

Based on a few research, reviews and experimentations so far, I came to the conclusion I won't be able to get a shallow depth of field ( sharp subject and blured background) with my S5 unless I take a portrait from far away using lots of zoom (which also mean I will need lots of light). Another way if to take it on macro mode but it strangely accentuate depth and you also need to take the picture from no more than about 2 feet from the subject. I got a nice outside shot of my mother and daughter that way but as I said it looks a bit strange. Call it "artistic" if you prefer ;-).

OK, that's it, I want a real, full frame dSLR camera. Actually when I finally buy a dSLR, it will have to be full frame. The Canon Rebel won't be enough because it is not full frame like a standard 35mm camera. Until then, I can survive with my 5Sis slr-like. The Canon 5D would do. Not top of the line but still a great camera.

Body without lens : about 2400$.

Add about 1000 for a good general purpose zoom (something around 35mm-80mm)

This 1000$ 24mm wide angle would be amazing:

This other 135mm/f2 1000$ lense is also to die for . Great for portrait with superb control of the depth of field, something I really can't do with my S5is (the full frame of the 5D would also helps). Zoom lenses are fun but always a tradeoff. With a fixed lens, you get a fully optimized (and usually faster) result.

Add 2500$ for a good powerfull zoom.

If I manage to go through this project management certificate and get the job that should follow, that should come within my reach one day. I'm already accepted in the program but the most difficult part remains: to do it full time, 5 courses per session and survive without salary until I find a job with at least some management responsibilities. I guess that's why I need to dangle this candy in front of me...

If going for a Canon 40D (1.6x crop factor), the ultimate portrait lens may be the EF 50mm f/1.2L USM (about 1400$). Otherwise the full frame equivalent would be the 85mm f/1.2L USM II (1800$).

Blutengel Labyrinth

Je suis un peu en retard, le dernier album de Blutengel date déjà de l'an passé mais bon, j'en suis à ma 3e écoute alors je me permets un petit review.

À la première écoute je n'étais pas trop certain. Sur cet album, Blutengel nous présente une nouvelle chanteuse ( Ulrike Goldmann ). Sa voix est plus profonde et intéressante que la petite voix de pétasse de (la tout de même adorable) Constance Rudert. Notez bien que cette dernière est toujours présente dans le groupe.

Chris Pohl est d'une grande forme vocale, bien supérieur aux précédents albums. Il se rapproche parfois (en arrivant à sa cheville, ce qui est déjà beaucoup) de Alexander Veljanov. En fait toute la production sonore est supérieure; c'est un plaisir à entendre avec de bons écouteurs. Soit dit en passant j'utilise mes Audio-Technica CK7 sans me gêner sur le BBE et Mach3Bass effect de mon Iaudio7 pour ce genre de musique. Ça défonce !

Quoi penser de la composition ? On reconnait parfois des influences de Depeche Mode des années 90. À d'autres moments ça me fait penser à Diary of dream. Le son est aussi plus souvent Goth que simplement EBM (bien que presque toutes les tounnes se dansent très bien). La voix plus sombre et mystérieuse de Ulrike contribue à cela.

J'aimerais plus de pièces où on entend clairement les trois voix mais bon, dans l'ensemble c'est bien, très bien même. Blutengel à évolué et nous offre un album mieux peaufiné, plus mature.Même les paroles sont souvent un cran au dessu de leur moyenne plutôt basse. Tout est plus subtil, plus pensé, mieux travaillé qu'avant. Oui on retrouve encore leur thème vampire-romantique mais il me semble que ça passe mieux.

Définitivement un de leurs meilleurs albums sinon le meilleur.

Si je devais présenter une tounne comme étant ma préférée, je serais tenter de dire Dreamland mais le choix n'est pas facile à faire. En fait j'aime le petit coté DM des années 90 dans cette pièce. Je me demande aussi si la pièce s'addresse à leur nouvelle chanteuse (supposition potin facile j'avoue).

Après des années à écouter Blutengel en MP3, je me décide finalement à acheter Labyrinth et Angel Dust. Ce sera ma deuxième tentative avec Storming the Base, j'espère que cette fois ils auront ma commande en stock, la dernière fois pour une commande de Cinema Strange ils avaient du me rembourser, leur site non a jours montrant des albums qu'ils n'avaient même pas.

Je pense que je vais re-vendre le téléobjectif et le wide angle de Canon. Le téléobjectif est innutile avec ma caméra qui fait déjà 12X et j'ai maintenant trouvé un bien meilleur wide angle, le Raynox HD-6600Pro58 (voir exemple sur ce lien en bas de la page) qui ne fait presque pas de distortion et est plus large (X.66 au lieu de x.75). Le gros avantage est qu'il demeure très linéaire. ( Qu'est-ce que tu penses de ça mon Gilles ?).

Le bug c'est qu'il semble qu'il y ait une légère distortion inverse si on ne pose pas de façe (par exemple une bâtisse prise d'en bas en regardant vers le haut). Peut être est-il préférable d'utiliser une lentille qui distortionne normalement pour ensuite corriger l'abération à l'ordinateur si on pose surtout des bâtisses (apparament que ça se fait mais je n'ai pas encore essayé). Pour des paysages et des photos de groupe par contre, c'est une autre affaire. Autre avantage par rapport au Canon : le Raynox permet d'attacher d'autres lentilles à l'extérieur, tel qu'un filtre UV (très utile pour photographier des paysage, les deux devraient quasiment venir ensemble à mon avis). La Raynox corrige la distorsion mais les coins se retrouvent un peu hors focus... On ne peut pas tout avoir.

Si j'arrive à vendre les deux adapteurs Canon, ça devrait couvrir les frais du Raynox et peut être même un fltre UV B+W extra-wide fait pour ce type de lentille que j'ai vu chez B&H. Le devant de ce filtre sort à 86mm pour éviter le vignetting... Ça commence à faire une belle lentille ça !

J'ai aussi trouvé un adapteur 58mm en aluminium de Lensmate pas cher. Plus robuste que celui en plastique de Canon, il permet aussi un meilleur contact avec les lentilles dont l'anneau est en métal. Il font aussi un 52mm. Si je vais de l'avant avec l'idée du Raynox, je vais y aller pour cette fixture de meilleur qualité.

Edit: Je vais attendre au moins quelques semaines de plus et faire plus de tests avant de décider. Peut être pourrais-je simplement ajouter un plus large et économique Opteka et corriger digitalement la distorsion, au moins je ne me ramasserais pas avec les coins un peu flou, ce qui est impossible à corriger par la suite.

Je me suis finalement décidé à payer presque aussi cher que le prix de ma caméra pour ajouter un bon flash. Après tout la majorité de mes photos sont prises à l'intérieur et même pour l'extérieur, un bon flash précisément ajusté est utile pour réduire les ombres dans certaines conditions.

Je me demande encore si j'ai bien fait d'acheter un 'SLR-like' plutôt qu'une vrai caméra SLR. Évidement c'est un compromis pour pouvoir faire aussi de la vidéo. Mon Canon S5iS permet quand même un très bon contrôle manuel. Il est aussi plus compact qu'un vrai SLR sauf qu'avec le flash 430EX dessus, il devient difficile à manipuler. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la photo, le flash est aussi gros que la caméra. Pourtant c'est le plus petit flash entièrement compatible. Plus petit que ce modèle, je n'aurai pas pu incliner la tête, ce qui est à mon avis absolument nécessaire. De plus avec ce modèle, je trouve facilement des diffuseurs, très utile pour adoucir la lumière.

J'ai trouvé cette photo de mon ensemble caméra-flash sur le web. L'angle exagère la grosseur du flash mais tout de même, ça vous donne une idée. Ce n'est pas tellement que le flash est gros, c'est plutôt que la caméra est relativement compacte. Si jamais je veux faire une longue séance photo sans tripod, je vais éventuellement devoir me trouver une poignée. Autre utilité : l'autofocus assist beam (la partie rouge sur le flash) est plus puissant et surtout mieux positionné que celui sur la caméra qui est si facile à cacher avec la main en tenant l'appareil. Évidemment il y a aussi l'avantage de pouvoir utiliser le wide-converter avec flash. Sans flash externe, la lentille fait de l'ombre dans le bas de la photo car le flash interne est trop bas.

Ce qui est bien avec ce flash c'est que si jamais je me décide plus tard à aller me chercher une vrai SLR de Canon comme le Rebel XT, il sera compatible et définitivement à la hauteur. Peut être plus tard quand j'aurai trouvé l’emploi et le salaire qui devrait venir suite à mon certificat en gestion de projet.

Je posterai une autre fois un test pour comparer le résultat entre le flash interne et le flash externe. Les essais rapides que j'ai fais hier soir sont très concluants. Dommage que je n'ai pas eut le flash et le temps de montrer un peu à ma mère comment utiliser ma caméra pour les photos du baptême de Camille. J'aurais pu lui préparer un mode semi-automatique facile à utiliser... Les photos prises par ma mère et mon beau père avec leur petites point and shoot ne sont vraiment pas terribles... Ça prend un bon flash pour poser à distance dans une église. Le mien à une portée de plus de 100 pieds. De face et à pleine puissance, je peux vous faire bronzer !

Seul réel regret dans mes achats d'équipement photo : le téléconverter X1.5 : inutile. Le zoom de la caméra est déjà bien assez fort à 12X. en plus que pour la luminosité, on repassera. C'est aussi l'inconvénient avec un si grand zoom (équivalent 36-432mm), c'est moins lumineux. Avec une vraie SLR je pourrais avoir une lentille avec moins de zoom et plus de lumière ET une autre lentille zoom juste quand c'est nécessaire. Même chose pour le grand angle mais bon, avec mon super flash, ça compense le problème dans la majorité des situations. L'adapteur grand angle est utile et amusant à utiliser bien que la distorsion de l'image soit importante. Il agrandi l'angle assez pour baisser à un équivalent de 27mm. En fait juste l'adapteur servant à connecter ces lentilles optionnelles est utile car il permet de tenir la caméra par la lentille, ce qui aide à avoir un meilleur support. Je vais bientôt recevoir mon tripod compact (qui entrera dans mon sac de transport), ce qui complétera mon kit.

En bref est-ce que je recommanderais le Canon S5iSà un ami ? Oui, c'est un appareil versatile et compact idéal pour ceux qui veulent pouvoir faire de la vidéo en son stéréo en plus d'avoir un bon contrôle manuel sur les photos. Si vous n'avez pas besoin de la vidéo ou que ça ne vous dérange pas de trainer en plus une caméra vidéo, il est évident qu'on obtient de meilleur résultat avec une vrai SLR mais le compromis offert par la S5iS est tout à fait acceptable. Le mode full-auto donne des résultats moyens mais les nombreuses possibilités de semi-auto (tel que time priority fixé à 1/125e avec Iso 80 + flash indirect) permettent d'obtenir un résultat semi-professionnel très satisfaisants, surtout lorsqu'utilisé avec un flash externe. En full-auto il a tendance à monter le Iso trop rapidement et à poser trop lentement (1/60e de sec pour photographier un bébé qui grouille, ce n'est pas assez vite).

Si il y a bien un type de musique pour laquelle je me fout de la reproduction audio exacte, c'est bien l'EBM (élctro/eurodance/whatever).

Malheureusement je n'ai pas les CD originaux mais même en MP3 avec le mode MP (MP3 enhance), BBE à 1/10 juste pour clarifier un brin les transients dans les aigu et un bombardant Mach3Bass à 5/10 en plus de l'habituelle réduction dans les mids, Blutengel défonce la baraque pas juste un petit peu !

J'imagine que c'est comme ça que ça sonnerait si on avait des soirées Goth/ebm dans une discothèque de yo avec super système de son.

Lorsqu'on s'assure de sceller à la perfection l'écouteur au canal auditif, c'est fou ce qu'on peu obtenir comme son avec de bons canalphones !

Le mélange d'extrème basses et de petits sons ultra aigu de cette musique électronique n'a rien de naturel mais ça n'en demeure pas moin une véritable masturbation de tympan. Il ne faut juste pas trop écouter les paroles qui sont épouventablement gothico-cucul.

J'imagine que Blutengel est mon petit guilty pleasure ;-).

Dans un autre ordre d'idée, avez vous remarqué à quel point 'The end of love' sur l'album Angel dust ressemble à du Diary of dream ?

J 'ai entendu une pièce de Fado chanté par la japonaise tsuquida hideco sur Live365 et je voudrais bien mettre la main sur son album 'Fado Nocturna''...le problème c'est que j'ai aucune idée où trouver ça. Une recherche sur google me pointe seulement sur des liens en japonais ou en portuguais... Quelqu'un lit le japonais dans la salle ? ;-)

Après avoir écouté les trois CD d'Unexpect, je peux déjà dire que leur premier CD ''Utopia'' est une première exploration intéressante mais il faut vraiment attendre ''In a Flesh aquarium'' pour être jetté en bas de notre chaise. Le petit album ''We Invaders'' est aussi déjà bien développé et on sent déjà dans quel direction le groupe se dirige, c'est à dire quelque part très très loin au fin fond de la galaxie où quelques extra terrestres bizards apprécieront surement leur musique.

Fascinant. J'adore.

In a flesh aquarium est un album au moins aussi déconcertant que ''The astonished eyes of evening'' de Cinema Strange. Attention, le style n'est pas comparable à part l'étrangeté. Musicalement pour certain ça sera plus dur à digérer que Cinema Strange. Je dirais que In a Flesh Aquarium de Unexpect est une forme de musique classique moderne avec des influence métal, goth et parfois un tantinet electro. Très dur à décrire. C'est de la musique d'extra terrestre ou autre forme d'entité mystérieuse venu d'un autre plan d'existence.

Audio signal generator tone test: 3 earphones comparison.

I was curious to see how my earphones would compares when tested against a signal generator. Since I don’t have access to a professional audio signal generator, I was seriously limited with my computer sound card and some shareware. For this reason, I wasn’t able to properly test the audible limit at high frequencies (I was most likely hitting the limit of my sound card). My purpose was just to compare the Audio-technica CK7, Sony EX90 and Etymotic ER6. I also did the same tests with a cheap pair of earphone you can buy from Sony for about 20$.

I first tested 3 single tones (bass, mid and high frequency range) before testing the three tones at once to see how easy it was to separate the three tones.

For the bass test, I used a 33 Hz tone, which is very very deep bass. The best result by a large margin was offered by the Sony EX90. These earphones do produce amazingly clear and deep bass. The CK7 was also pretty good and the worse was the poor little ER6. The cheap earphone was able to make me ear the 33Hz tone but certainly not as clearly as the other more expensive ones. Actually with the EX90, I was still able to clearly ear the tone down to about 28 Hz.

The high frequency test at 16.4 KHz was also and surprisingly won by the Sony EX90 with the two others being close behind. Even the CK7, which was not able to offer crystalline cymbal harmonics while listening to Maiden’s opening of Heaven can wait was still able to produce a strong high frequency tone. The cheap earphone was now clearly showing its inferior quality.

The most interesting test was made with the three tones played at once. Once again, the most impressive result came from the Sony EX90. I was clearly able to ear the three tones. It was able to reproduce the high frequency even while oscillating at a crazy 33 Hz. The mid 1 KHz was loud but this didn’t distract from the extreme limits tones. The other two where close behind with the ER6 still able not to look too bad because the 1 KHz was not too over loud. The CK7 mid frequency was too loud and was distracting from the other extreme tones.

Conclusion:

The frequency range spec given by earphone manufacturer is useless (except the chart provided by Etymotic). Who cares if your earphone is able to reproduce a 20 KHz tone you can’t even ear when it is not able to offer a realistic frequency response across the audible band? The Etymotic ER6 looks bad in this artificial tone test but is still the best sound producing device I ever heard. The frequency response is so well matched with the average human ear response you can swear the signer is right there in front of you (with a high quality recording of course). Hey! It brings back Nina Simone from the dead I tell you and it’s not even a very good recording!

Audio-Technica CK7 spec is a ridiculous and meaningless 12 – 24,000 Hz! Of course they don’t provide a curve because it would show how bad it is… The mid frequencies are so loud around 1-3 KHz it will drown every subtleties in the extreme ranges anyway. Hopefully I have a good equalizer in my Iaudio7 and I can save many settings. One setting will be used exclusively for these CK7. Once equalized with a reduction of about 3-4dB in the mid range, these are pretty good. Even the Heaven can wait cymbal test gets a decent score now. I also think the CK7 highs are still improving; maybe they need a longer burn-in. Maybe the extreme high frequency tests I did yesterday kind of waked them up.

The Sony EX90 are really good, too bad they don’t’ provide better isolation. Some people with smaller ears may also find the large “bud” housing the speaker a bit too large and uncomfortable. I don’t have this problem but my girlfriend prefer the CK7 for this reason. When you wear the CK7 pointing up with the wire going around your ear and down your back (instead of in front of you), the isolation is good and the comfort is A1.

The best thing one could do with a good fully adjustable equalizer would be to use various test tones to tune the CK7 to give a response similar to the un-equalized ER6. That’s pretty much what I did. Did it make the CK7 able to bring Nina Simone from the dead? No. You still need the ER6 to do that. Does it provide enjoyable listening ? Yes, I'm enjoying it right now. The extra boom in the bass is also usefull while listening to jazz.

These now equalized Audio-Technica will still be very good at reproducing electronic music, not as good as the Sony EX90 but since they offer better isolation, these will be better when used in noisy environment. Actually once equalised they gain half a point, which would raise it to 7.5/10.

Je fais souvent des achats en ligne et souvent je perd mon temps à essayer de trouver de ces fameux ''coupon codes'' pour avoir un rabais. La majorité des sites de coupons présenten des codes qui ne marchent même pas et ne sont que des pièges à cons pour présenter de la pub...

Enfin bref, j'ai finalement réussi à avoir 10% de rabais chez Archambault en ligne avec ce code : 367-V4Z5-C5M2-Y5U2 trouvé sur Retail me not.

J'ai acheté pour la deuxième fois deux albums de Renee Fleming qui étaient trop maganés pour pouvoir faire un rip en flac parfait (Shubert Album et Mozart Arias) . Pour avoir droit à la livraison gratuite, j'ai aussi ajouté son très peu dispendieux ''Sacred Songs'' que je n'avais pas déjà.

J'étais aussi tenté par son enregistrement intégral live du Cosi fan tutte de Mozart mais ils le vendent bien trop cher à plus de 70$ ( 48.99$ sur amazon.ca, shipping inclu, moins éventuel coupon de 10$ si on ouvre un nouveau compte). Ça sera pour une autre fois ... pour ma première fête des père peut être ? Un seul en stock par contre ...

Audio Technica ATH-CK7 earphones.

I finally got my Audio Technica CK7 earphones . Paid about 90$ including shipping from a reputable (ID verified) ebay seller.

Right out of the box, the highs where a bit harsh and there was a noticeable level of sibilance. This was actually a good sign because all high end earphones I got so far did this before an overnight burn-in. The memorable exception was the fake Sony earphones. I don’t know for sure what is so different in hi-fi earphones that does that but it is probably because they can actually produce such high frequencies while the cheap ones just cut it off anyway.

After an overnight burn in, harshness and sibilance are gone. I checked impedance and everything looks all right. There’s a little bit more difference between the left and right speakers (about 1 Ohm) so it is not as precise as the ER6 Etymotics. One speaker will probably play a tiny bit louder but it won’t be noticeable.

Then the real test began in my noisy work environment. This was not a problem while listening to big noisy music like Hatebreed and Front line Assembly but with classical music, external noise and speaker noise really gets in the way. Since I already have replacement foam tips on order for my ER6, I didn’t mind replacing the provided silicon tips of my CK7 by the Etymotic foams. I had to stretch the opening a little bit but it still fits and it really raises the CK7 to a new level of quality by significantly reducing external and speaker induced noise. That is how I’ll use my CK7: with ER6-14F Etymotic foam tips. It is a small easy to do mod that is really worth it. Note that this mod could be done on the Sony EX90 earphones but because of the vent holes on the buds, it would not be as efficient.

Sound description:

It is still a bit early to provide a detailed appreciation but so far I can say it is not as clear, precise and detailed as the amazing Etymotic ER6 by a long shot. Even the genuine Sony EX90 have much better sparkling highs extension. In the mid-range, it is comparable to the Sony, offering a soft vocal reproduction, which is pleasing while listening to Renee Fleming. The bass is good but not as sharp as the Sony or Etymotic. When pushed to extreme low and highs (Front line assembly with some Mach3Bass and BBe), it gets a bit messy. I think the fully closed design don’t leave much breath to the speakers to express themselves so the sound is a bit muffled (but not as much as with the horrible Sony fakes). The only advantages over the Sony are the possibility to fit the Etymotic foam tips for greater isolation and the lower price. Otherwise you get more details across the band with the Sony EX90.

About the built quality, these are little titanium tanks, no problem there. The provided pouch is very cheap, nothing like the one provided by Etymotic or the outstanding Sony leather case. The wires are nice, not too tangly and quite thick. Microphonics are kept to minimum, especially while wearing the wires above your ear for extra support.

To make a long story short, at about 2/3 the price of the Sony EX90 or Etymotic ER6, you get 2/3 the sound quality, loosing much details in the process. For exemple, it won`t bring Nina Simone back from the dead signing images just for you like the ER6 can do but it will still be very enjoyable to listen to her through a pair of CK7.

The CK7 is a quality earphone for sure but it doesn’t compete very well with its >100$ competitors. I give it 7/10, very good but nothing to rave about. (I gave an excellent 8/10 to the EX90 and an exceptional 9/10 to the ER6).

EDIT: After re-testing with the provided silicon tips, I found out the Etymotic foam tips increase isolation by a large margin but also contribute to muffle the sound a little bit (it doesn`t do that on the ER6). Frequency response of the CK7 is better with the provided silicon tips.

Ok, I’m switching back to my Etymotic ER6 now... These are addictive.

When I`ll get some time, I`ll install an audio frequency generator software on my computer and will compare my 3 pair of earphones at various frequencies.

Iaudio7 / Etymotic ER6 : Front line assembly test.

Wow!

I put on Front line`s Millennium and for this type of music, I don`t mind cheating on the EQ so I crank up the BBE Mach3bass to 7/10 and the volume to 32/40.

The result is Thunderous !

High defenition mind altering musical madness at its best, directly injected with maniacal precision into my brain. The ultra bass remains super sharps and snappy and doesn`t drown the complex digital high frequencies. These ER6 are the most amazing sound producing devices I ever heard.

ps.: I`ll say it once again, anyone using these expensive ER6 to listen to MP3s are completely missing the point. Lossless format absolutely required. (I use FLAC produced with EAC).

Ok, Voilà maintenant une exploration des bands du B stage pour le samedi 21 Juin.

Je vais updater à mesure que j'ajoute un band à la fois...

Unexpect : Mon winner du B stage. Groupe Montréalais très expérimental. Pensez ''metal meets Cinema Strange''. Goth-metal-opera-trance mind fuck. Les deux guitaristes chantent mais la voix principale est une chanteuse (soprano chantant souvent en style ''opérà'' en même temps que les deux guitaristes ajoutent leur voix d'ogres en background) et qu'un violon débile fait valser le tout. Très créatif. En bonus la chanteuse est pas mal cute. Écoutez Rooted Shadows sur leur page Myspace, c'est un bon exemple.

On peux acheter leur CDs directement de leur site web pour presque 50% du prix chez HMV (sans compter le fait que HMV ne tiennent plus les anciens albums). Pour une fois que le cash va plus directement aux artistes ! Fan instantané, j'ai acheté les albums. À 10-12$ chaques, c'est donné. Ils ont aussi un très beau chandail à capuchon pour les filles, domage que le même design ne soit pas offert sur le T-shirt... Je veux les voir assurément, en espérant qu'il n'y ait pas de conflit d'horraire.

Hammerfall : Soft metal épique Suédois. Un tantinet cu-cul avec leurs beaux airs mélodieux mais pas mauvais quand même. Un groupe pour relaxer un peu dans le festival.

Overkill :Des vieux de la vieille dans le genre trash métal. Personellement je trouve ça un peu générique mais bon...

Type O Negative : Goth metal lourd et déprimant tournant souvent plus du côté sombre goth que du côté épique métal. À s'en jetter en bas du pont. Ça tombe bien, il y à le pont Jacques Cartier pas loin du site. Je vais voir si l'horaire me le permet sans manquer Hatebreed et Iron sur le main stage bien entendu.

Symphony X :''Progressive Power Metal '' . Je ne sais trop pourquoi mais je n'accroche pas. De longues tounnes qui ne s'en vont nul part est l'impression que ça me donne mais je reconnait que ce sont de bons musiciens. Ils ont apparament un gros following surtout en europe.

Dethklok : Dites moi quelqu'un que ce band là ne se prend pas au sérieux right ? Un ''virtual death metal band'' what the fuck ? Ok, il y a un vrai band derrière la série animée, fine...mais sans blague je suis naïf ou même ça ce n'est pas sérieux ? Pas sur ...

En bref, mes priorités pour la journée du 21 Juin après Maiden sont Hatebreed et Unexpect. en second lieu Type O negative et Hammerfall. Si par miracle j'arrive à voir 4 de ces 5 shows dans la journée, je vais être aux anges (et je vais être vraiment mort). Il faudra vraiment modérer sur la bière, pas pour le cash mais pour rester en forme pour Maiden.
